Should We Be Proud Of Australias Bogan Culture?
No we shouldn’t. I was Australian born and raised and then moved to America for several years to study. Our ‘bogan’ culture is not something to be proud of. To be stereotyped to moccasins, flannel shirts and VB in our hands is not something that anyone would want to be seen as. Whilst living overseas I got many comments about ‘wrestling crocodiles’, ‘snags on the barbie’ and ‘living in the outback’ and although those comments were what we are known for, sometimes they have a negative impact on our worldwide reputation. ‘Bogans’ are seen as a lower class of person; with a lack of common intellect, disgraceful behaviour and no self respect, sense of style or personal hygiene, and anyone who wants to live with that reputation is seriously deluded. If you look back to the Cronnella riots in Sydney, it’s a classic example of how ‘bogans’ affect Australians and Australias worldwide rep. You can be Australian, put some snags on the barbie… Just do it gracefully.
