Should Walmart Cashiers Be Allowed To Do This?

Cashiers are not allowed to do that. It does invite the possibility of employee pilferage or inventory tampering (as other responders have said). Also, the UPC (on the box) serves as your proof of purchase for claiming any mail-in rebates or warranties. But as I said, cashiers should never do something like this, regardless of whether it is honest and well-intentioned. Had a security guard or loss-prevention associate spotted you leaving the store with merchandise not in its original packaging, you could have wound up in trouble. And, if you had intended this to be a gift, the cashier should’ve known not to remove it from its original packaging. Speak with a manager or supervisor but do it politely. You obviously should have queried the cashier on the spot when you had the chance, but I do understand that hindsight is 20/20 and sometimes we’re too caught up in the moment to think clearly. Similar things have happened to me as well.
