David Williamson asks whether such bold legislation could – or should – become a reality here THE election of the first black American President has transfixed the world while Norway has been quietly transforming the role of women in leadership, shattering the glass ceiling. Norwegian companies were required by law to ensure that 40% of boardroom posts were held by women within two years from January 1, 2006. The business community in the Scandinavian country was initially outraged by the legislation and stunned by the fact that Conservative trade and industry secretary Ansgar Gabrielsen had introduced it without informing his own Prime Minister.
