Should UK citizens be allowed to own guns for self defence?
Yes UK citizens should be allowed but it should still be under very tight rules. It would however need a complete change in the law because at present ‘self defence’ is only allowed if you use minimum force….. LETHAL force is illegal at the moment. I agree with Crow to a great extent. However, the 50’s were much more tender and innocent times I believe. People back then had ‘community spirit’, a good sense of responsibility and were less likely to use guns for all the wrong reasons. Look at us now though! We have gangster teens and Eastern Euro mafia roaming around armed to the teeth with ‘un-licensed’ handguns and worse. Also, since we had so many slaughters in recent years such as the Hungerford and Dunblane incidents to name but two, then I think that ‘something’ had to be done about gun ownership. Unfortunately, the govt took public opinion in it’s day to their usual Nth degree and ‘almost’ banned gun ownership completely (certain types of guns anyway) and now it’s hardly worth o
