Should Trade unions stay out of politics?
No, because put simply the UK Trade Union Movement are actually the founders of the Labour Party – they created it and not the other way around. But, it’s a very long history, going way back into the very beginnings of the Industrial Revolution when working people had to fight for their rights. Until Labour was swept into power on a landslide victory in 1945, there was no NHS, no Welfare State and no paid holidays for the working people of UK. Thanks to Labour and the Unions we now have all of the above and much more. You might be interested to know that it was the Australian Labour Unions who fought for and won the eight hour working day for their members. Meanwhile, workers here in UK continued to work 12 hour shifts. Until about 1968 we still worked a six day week here in UK – Monday to Saturday – but the Unions changed all of that.
