Should they lower the drinking age to 18 in the US??
It’s difficult for me to say. Honestly, I don’t think alot of 21 y/o’s are more mature these days than most 18 y/o’s. But what many people don’t realize is that while 21 is the minimum PURCHASE age, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily always unlawful for a person under 21 to consume alcohol. Since the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 (info available online), most states have laws that make some privision of alcohol consumption by minors in private settings, for example, making it acceptable for a minor to drink in the home of and/or with the supervision of a parent or legal age spouse. I don’t think anything magical happens to people at either 18 or 21 that suddenly makes them more responsible to handle anything, but since most 18 y/o’s still have 16 and 17 y/o friends, whereas most 21 y/o’s don’t, I’m not sure it would be wise to let 18 y/o’s have full access to purchase and possess alcohol, anythime, anywhere.
