In Ireland, we were the first to introduce the ban on smoking in the workplace… that caused uproar initially, but is working really well now. The next step will be to introduce the ban on displaying any kind of tobacco products in shops/pubs etc, and putting an end to all vending machines… that is currently being put forward by our Health Minister Mary Harney, and is likely to cause even more uproar, especially as lots of shops and pubs have invested in high profile cigarette machines in the last year… I think it’s a very positive move towards the ultimate banning of all tobacco products, which is the only way to go… and I say this as a smoker. I know some people see this as a negative move, driving it underground eventually, but my way of looking at it is that those who choose to continue will suffer the same damage as current tobacco users, but there will be a tiny percentage of people affected, as opposed to half the population.
