Should there be a NC-17 Movie rating?
I think the idea for an NC-17 rating is fine. However, the problem has been in the execution, with some very arbitrary reasons for giving it, things that seem out of wack. Check out the South Park movie. The story really came from a movie Trey Parker and Matt Stone did earlier, called “Orgasmo” (in short, it was about a Mormon who takes a non-sex part in a porno movie as a superhero called Orgasmo so he can afford to get married). No real violence to speak of, nothing outrageous in terms of nudity, but a lot of foul laguage. It got an NC-17. So, in South Park, one of the points the parents make is that you can be as violent as you want, just so long as you don’t use bad words. Plus, you get directors who play the system.
