Should the whole world learn the English language?
Just because of the Anglophone world (basically the USA and the UK) has stronger economies and cultural impacts on the rest of the world, saying everybody must learn English is like eradicating the identity of the rest of the world, and all their respective cultures. As for the benefits of speaking English because of our business potential, it should be a personal choice. In the same way that it is good in the tourist and business industry for foreigners to learn English, we should endeavour to learn to speak their languages instead of forcing them to conform to us.
No. Non -English speakers should only learn simple or business English. otherwise they would only corrupt the purity of the glorious English language by changing its syntax and vocabulary. Diplomats and people who need to negotiate in English would need to learn it well though. It’s our language – leave it alone please.
No that is just arrogant. Just because you are English and lots of people speak it does not mean everyone should. It’s like saying should everyone be a Muslim? No, everyone has the right to be whatever religion they want, if any, not to have it imposed upon them. How would you feel, as en English speaking person, I assume, if one day it became law for you to learn Chinese, because that’s the most spoken language in the world? You wouldn’t be too happy, I’m sure. Yes, people have the right to learn English; yes, learning English is useful in today’s society, because it has become the most learnt second language in the world for reasons which many people do not understand. Should everyone learn English? No. Don’t be so naïve. EDIT: I’m English by the way.
