Should the US Government focus on immigration reform and what reforms should it consider?
Yes, the US government should focus on immigration reform because an excess of undocumented workers has numerous deleterious effects on our society. However, that reform has to be highly comprehensive and focus on *why* immigrants are coming to the US. Unfortunately, that would mean attacking the Big Business power structure that likes having a ready supply of cheap labor. It would also mean radical reforms to agricultural subsidies (again, pissing off Big Agribusiness).For example, it is estimated that about 1.5 million corn farmers in Mexico went bankrupt when NAFTA allowed highly-subsidized American corn into the Mexican market. Where do you think those corn farmers went? Try any meat-packing plant in the US. As I am fond of saying, I will believe the US is serious about immigration reform when I see a corporate CEO ‘perp walked’ into a courthouse for hiring undocumented workers.
