Should the United States adopt English as an official national language?
First of all, I think we have to point out that there is a difference between adopting English as the national language, and the “English-Only” concept. Just to dispose of the issue, “English-Only”, as I understand it, is a proposal to use English to the exclusion of all other languages in this country. In fact, it advocates banning all foreign languages. I think this is clearly wrongheaded. We should teach foreign languages in our schools, or at least offer them as an elective. We should allow private businesses that want to cater to a particular ethnic group, to post business signs in that language. However,…. I think that the United States would benefit greatly from adopting a standard, national language. Being that we are a nation founded, and populated mostly by English speaking people, that language should be English. This nation is a melting pot.
