Should the Olympic Games have stayed in Athens, Greece, permanently ?
It does sound like a lovely idea. They certainly have a deep abiding passion for the true meaning of the Games and would always keep it pure I’m sure. I suppose other countries would pay for Greece to keep the Games, and it’d save us a LOT of money as the £9,000,000,000+ we’re spending in London is SICK. But in reality there’s NO WAY due to politics and propaganda that countries would stop bidding to host the Games.
My personal view is no. I believe that every continent and country should have the opportunity to apply to stage the Olympic Games. Officially this is a sporting event and not a political one and therefore the way a country is run should not enter into it. Having said that, it is now impossible to leave politics out of the Olympic Games and we all know the way China and other countries terrorise their people. I believe that the IOC gave the franchise to run this years Olympics in the hope that it would encourage them to increase the human rights of the Chinese population. Unfortunately the powers that be in China have done nothing, or very little to help bring about a more democratic country. As sport and politics can no longer be separated with regard to the Olympics, or other International events, I do still feel that every country should have the opportunity to apply to stage these events, but in the case of countries who repress their population, these countries should not even be
No I think that moving it every time gives people the chance to attend if it is in their continent. The IOC need to be smarter about where they choose to give the games – China was always going to be controversial – they just chose to ignore it (allegedly because of the back handers that were/are going on in the IOC).
