Should the MacBook Air fan be noticeable?

Hey all, Firstly, I ended up getting a MacBook Air thanks to the fantastic advice I received in this forum. I have a quick question, should the MacBook Air’s fan be noticeable? I’ve noticed that the fan on this is probably the loudest I’ve ever had on a laptop. It’s not noticeable if I’m in a lecture or watching T.V. but if I’m in a room alone then I can definitely hear it.
