Jan. 31–NEW CANAAN — Frigid temperatures were not enough to keep young athletes off the courts Saturday as the New Canaan Field Club hosted a multi-venue national platform tennis tournament. With temperatures hovering between 15 and 20 degrees, participants in the American Platform Tennis Association Junior National Championships came well prepared, wearing winter hats, layers of fleece and gloves. Peter Swindell, 12, said he didn’t mind. The below-freezing weather gave Peter and his partner even more reason to keep up the pace. “I like being in the cold,” Peter, a New Canaan resident, said. “It’s fun. I feel good, we’ve been trying to get the net whenever we could.” Mike Gillespie, director of the paddle tennis program at the New Canaan Field Club, said he was honored to serve as the tournament director this year.
