Should the Government support an early transition to CCS through greater allocation of research, development and demonstration funds?
The Government should support research, development and demonstration funding sufficient to deploy commercial scale first of a kind facilities as discussed above in 1. 4. Is there a sufficient level of data available to confirm the adequacy of CCS storage in Victoria? There remains uncertainty over the physical capacity and conditions of carbon storage sites within Victoria. Examples of such gaps can be seen in the limitations of data shown in Table 2, Appendix 4 of Review of Geological Storage Opportunities for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Victoria (2006), (CRC for Greenhouse Gas Technologies). Further data relating to the capacity, injectivity and containment characteristics of potential storage sites will assist the private sector in assessing where to develop storage sites. In the absence of such information, the uncertainty involved in exploring and better understanding sites may provide a barrier to the private sector developing storage sites. 5.
