Yes, we all know the saying, “spare the rod, spoil the child.” I hardly believe that was an edict intended to give parents the right to beat their children with a stick, but many people hang onto this as evidence that spanking is not just okay, it is sanctioned by God. “Spare the rod” refers to discipline, not spanking. And there is a difference between the two! Our education system does not need to return to corporal punishment to effectively discipline students. A better answer is to begin teaching parenting and anger management classes to every high school student. People are not born with parenting skills.
