The time has come so that it probably should be done, but until a reason arises that requires it, there’s unlikely to be change. British politics is usually a string of changes made through current necessity. The Church of England doesn’t raise its head much above the parapet and knows better than to usually involve itself in politics. Despite the state religion, our government is effectively secular. As an atheist I am not completely comfortable with the Church of England’s privileged position, but at the same time I appreciate the established church’s counter balancing effect to other more evangelical or radical sects. As a Via Media the CofE is well house trained in this respect. For me on a personal level, I believe it very important that the Church continues to look after the hundreds of ancient churches and holy buildings throughout the country.
