Should teachers salary be pegged on students performance?
Becky, everything you said is so very, very true. My concern is that when one’s pay is attached to the performance of the student, we need to think about the parent’s involvment in their own children’s lives and education as well. I get students in my 8th grade class who have had the input of social benefits to help propel the child and the parents refuse to allow the services because they don’t want ‘their child in a resource class’. Their own pride has been the downfall of many of the students who are struggling in my classroom. We have had recent shut downs and elimination of schools and teachers, only to have them re-apply and often not get their jobs back. Additionally, students who are benefitting from the good education and protection fromgun fire and hostility are lining up to attend my school. I went from 20 students in homeroom to 28 in two days. I believe that a student’s grade is as much a reflection on the teacher as the student. Sadly, teachers seem to become numb and run out of energy. Since everyone learns differently and there are at least nine identifies ways people learn, the streamlining effort of teaching one way and having everyone conform or fail is typical of life — adapt or get left behind. The gov’t is currently trying to implement necessary in public school with “inclusion” (special assistance for students who need extra help), but everything always runs at least ten years behind the need. 🙁 We want to help as many students as we can, but the paperwork gets in the way.
