Should schools in the UK only be allowed to teach children about islam if..?
Uh, I’d like to point out that many of those ‘barbaric practises’ that you have mentioned aren’t actually taught in the Qur’an, they are simply practises that people who dare to call themselves ‘Muslims’ have adopted over time, which are often not a teaching of the actual religion. The so-called practises that you call ‘facts’ are NOT facts about the religion – they are, like I said, contrived by some extreme fundamentalists and are completely against the teachings of Islam and what most good Muslims believe. So yes, I believe schools have every right to teach children about Islam, the ‘child friendly version’ as you call it is probably the real true ‘version’; your ‘version’ containing acts like ‘wife beating’ however I see no need for, as it has nothing to do with Islam whatsoever, only people’s warped perceptions of it.
I am all for the teaching of all religions in a ‘history of ideas’ sense of way. Indeed, without knowledge of holy scripture many other texts do not make sense. It is important to teach the impact Islam has had on the world along with the two other Abrahamic religions. It is important to teach some of the wisdom found in these texts, but it is not correct to teach that any version of scripture is the final, inerrant word direct from the creator of the universe. It is important to teach that many of our religious texts were mankind’s first attempts at law, philosophy, cosmology, ethics, biology, and geology. Clearly ones first attempt at something is rarely any good. We now have much better knowledge about the natural world and wider observable universe. So much so, that had this knowledge been available when holy texts were being written, no religion would have ever taken off. Moreover, the immorality of these texts should be highlighted and explained (like the examples you provide) –
Well in Scotland we do teach them about Islam and the other 4 major world religions so its a bit of a daft question i’m afraid, and to be honest Scotland is not that multi-cultural compared to where I grew up , Reading In response to your statement about barbaric practices etc, do we teach the kids about the pope’s denial of the use of contraception , the crusades where in the name of christ we savaged killed and raped half the european continent but hey thats in the past, and all the other bad sides of christianity? People were stoned in the bible (they were Jewish of course, they were flogged, etc etc.) I do not support any particular religion, and neither should we teach religion as a set of beliefs but more as a personal search, which from all religions we can all take some guidance. Sadly, like christianity most religions are less about religion and more about power now, and are controlled by fat sterrotypical men who have no clue what the masses have to suffer. What a stupid ques
