Should Puerto Rico remain a “commonwealth” of the U.S. or be given statehood…or independence?

So far, they’ve rejected Statehood in favor of retaining their current status. Statehood, while it would bring a lot of benefits with respect to their legal standing as a full State, would also bring about a HUGE economic impact in terms of cost of living, which would skyrocket. Also, there is a measure before Congress now that might require the official national language to be English, also seen as a problem. As a Commonwealth, they get the protection of the U.S. Government in times of war and virtually ALL the benefits of being citizens without paying taxes, though they do pay into Social Security. They also receive Medicare benefits. They also believe that Statehood would bring about the end of the Puerto Rican culture. There is far more to it than that…but the important thing to rem
