Should people face being locked up for 24 hours if they are caught dropping litter?
Littering is a problem and we should do something to tackle it, but I think the knee-jerk response of saying yes to prison is not the solution. I work in the prison system and it is already acutely overcrowded. Incarcerating people is also very expensive to the taxpayers. Better solutions would be alternative punishments along the lines of community service whereby people should be made to join litter picking gangs for example…this would have the double benefit of actually cleaning up the countryside at the same time. Prison should only be the last resort for serious crimes…and should not be overused for things like this.
