Should obese people be allowed to adopt?
I have an interesting answer. I’m gay, and at some point, I want to become a father. A few years ago, my best friend, “Rachel” (not her real name) asked me to donate sperm to her so she could have a baby. She was going to do it through IVF. Rachel would have custody of the child, and I would have visitation rights. The problem for me was that Rachel was morbidly obese. Morbidly. She’s 5’5″ and weighed well over 350 lbs. Both of her parents were also morbidly obese, and both died young due to their weight issues. I love Rachel, and I’d love to give her the gift of a child, but I won’t do it. Her weight is my concern – how can you be a fit parent when your life revolves around food, and you’re already unhealthy and having health issues due to your weight? And through genetics, my offspring with her would have an increased risk of obesity and health issues due to their increased weight.
