Betach! (Of Course!) Tzedakah is one of the central values of the Jewish tradition. Though tzedakah is translated in English as “charity”, it literally means “righteousness” or ‘justice.” We teach our students that to share their bounty with others is the way we create a just world. We collect tzedakah money and non-perishable food items in every class on Sunday morning. Food is collected for the Mitzvah Foodshelf and donated to local food pantries. Money is distributed through our tzedakah collective called Tamchui. Tamchui is what our sages called the “community chest” of tzedakah, used to fulfill people’s basic human needs. The parents, teachers and clergy of Mount Zion are always looking for opportunities to nurture and encourage our children’s motivation and desire to give to others. The most meaningful way for students to share what they have is if they in some way work for the money and then donate a portion of it to their class tzedakah fund.
