No, dogs and cats are NOT viable alternatives for testing because they do not have the physiology or immune responses that humans do. I do, however; know also that animal testing cannot be halted at this point – your comment on testing on humans being why. I wonder if the PETA people would volunteer to test the drugs for the benefit of all mankind. I seriously doubt it. Having said that, I am strongly for making sure that lab animals are humanely treated, and not subjected to arbitrary experiments just to see what would happen. Lab animals need to be treated better than in the past, and I think there should be oversight to ensure their humane treatment.
