Should members of Congress be allowed to add earmarks to appropriations bills?
The practice of adding earmarks to appropriations bills by the members of Congress is an inherently deceptive practice. This is a tactic practiced by political leaders on both sides to get legislation passed that the voters would be vehemently opposed to. The practice of earmarking should be condemned and abolished in the House of Representatives. The American people see this happen all too often, where a bill which is regarded as highly unpopular will be broken down and slipped into an appropriations bill. A recent example of this would be the “Department of Defense Funding Bill” which certain Congress people introduced into the DOD Funding Bill amendments which were a part of the failed Immigration Reform Act of the Bush administration. It seems that if the American people are opposed to certain legislation, or spending programs, Congress will then deploy the deceptive tactic of introducing it into legislation which is necessary for the continuity of the government, or programs that
