Should M. Trichet agree to discuss with European politicians while also retaining his independence?
THE MINISTER – I believe he’s doing so, but independence doesn’t rule out discussion. And I believe that there should indeed, in these circumstances, be a close dialogue with the Eurogroup President, the Commission and the Finance Ministers. Finally, there is no longer any dispute among the Europeans that the present situation is damaging European growth. The question is more one of international than European cooperation. Everyone is doing what has to be done, particularly the European Commission, which is going to publish a communication on the ten years of the euro. And which, I believe, has some good proposals for strengthening the Eurogroup and the dialogue with the Central Bank.
