Should it be a crime to knowing mistate facts while reporting news?

If you’re going to make it a crime for a major news source to knowingly misstate facts, why not for a minor one? If for a minor one, why not your blog? And if your your blog, why not any time you open your mouth? I really hate slippery-slope arguments in general, but freedom of speech is particularly prone to problems and gray areas where I feel that it’s important to keep well on the side of freedom. Even if it’s the freedom to be a bunch of greedy, lying, self-important morons. The fact is that information wants to be free. You can lie over at Fox News and spike any story you choose, but such things are ultimately self-defeating for a major newscaster: the information WILL get out, and then you look like a bunch of self-serving, small-minded, hypocritical jackasses whom you should never, ever, ever watch. And that’s precisely what happened in this case. Let the market decide what they want to watch. The only way to combat lies is with truth. Present them better truth and hopefully th
