Generally pen names are used if you want to remain anonymous to your readers. They’re used for authors who like their privacy. I myself write with a pen name though and like it better than my real one which is very long. I also chose it because I thought it would stick better in a reader’s mind. Perhaps you could do the same although I like your real name.

If you post writing online then don’t use your real name. Your name could be something you like; something about yourself or just a random thing. Generally I’d say go for something you like. If it’s for getting a book published then I would say it’s up to you. I like that idea of creating a whole new identity for yourself when you’re writing.
