Should I treat my birds with Probotic when they are on Psittavet and how?
Birds should be give Probotic AFTER any antibiotics. All antibiotics will affect the normal gut bacteria to some degree, (Psittavet less than most). Probotic is composed of freeze dried bacteria which are normally found in the intestines. When added to water these bacteria come “alive” and return the conditions in the gut to normal. It is recommended that a 5-7 day course of Probotic be given after any antibiotic therapy. Because Probotic contains normal live bacteria it MUST NOT be added to water containing antibiotics (Psittavet, Amtyl) or antiseptics (Aviclens) as these will kill the good bacteria in Probotic. Back to Top 2. What causes conjunctivitis (sore swollen eyes) in birds Psittacosis causes 80% of conjunctivitis in parrots. Some species are more susceptible than others. The Neophemas and Polytelis are very prone to conjunctivitis due to chlamydia. Trauma and mate aggression in cockatoos and grass parrots will often cause damage to the tissues around the eyes. Foreign bodies.
