Should i purchase a used car under 8 thousand dollars or keep my 99 mercury cougar?

Well, you probably won’t get much more then $2000 for your car, so if its running fine I’d keep it until it starts giving you problems. You could try to modify it, but few parts were made for the Cougar as it was an unpopular model, plus any mod’s you do will reduce the reliability and value of the car…so its kind of a waste of money. As for the cars you chose, I don’t think any of them will be much faster then your Cougar. I would suggest a Mustang V8 if you want speed/power, but sounds like you want a sporty I4 or V6. I wouldn’t recommend any Mitsubishi due to reliability issues, plus they haven’t had a turbo 4 since 1999. The Celica is okay, but not an upgrade over the Cougar, just a lateral move and too expensive for what you get. The Tiburon V6 is a nice ride and attractive, you can probably find a 2003/2004 model for about $8,000. You can also try to find an early 2000’s Honda Civic SI/Acura Integra, though expect to pay a premium price compared to the others you listed.
