Should I learn to read music notes before an instrument?

You should probably just learn the notes/chords as you learn to play them. Sure, you can learn what letter each note stands for, but the letters themselves won’t mean much until you know how they’re played. But try to learn the rhythmic values of the notes first. If you already know how long to hold out each type of note/rest, that will be one less thing to worry about while you’re actually learning to play your guitar. One last thing: you can teach yourself to play on some level, but it’s best to at least have a friend who can help you– it’s a lot to do by yourself!
