Joining the Air Force The United States Air Force is primarily responsible for defending the nation’s airspace. The Air Force employs service members in a variety of careers, most of which involve the support of a large fleet of aircraft designed to defend the skies, transport troops and equipment, and provide support for ground forces. The Air Force offers few combat jobs, employing most of its members in administrative or support capacities. Joining the Marine Corps Although the Marine Corps does offer opportunities in aviation and flight, its primary mission is on the ground. Marines are known for their role as the first group sent into combat situations and take great pride in their status as “the first to fight.” The service also offers a multitude of combat jobs and expects its members to be “riflemen first” in addition to their specialty.
