I have been working as a software developer for about fifteen years. I have found that my skills are useful in a broad variety of industries. I have worked for companies in telecom, agriculture, electronics, and biotech. At all of these companies I was using essentially the same skills and experience. I had to learn the domain, but that was not important in getting the job. I also have known people who design hardware. While the work may be just as interesting and rewarding the number of places where they can be employed is drastically smaller. There is a very small number of companies that design and/or build computer systems. But almost all big companies need custom software. So your prospects for employment are much better in software. Your education path sounds appropriate. I got a BS in Physics and often wish I had went to a school with a CS major.
