Chow Chows, like Pits and Rotts, get a bad reputation. Although some breeds (including the Chow) do tend to be more “dominate” than others, training, neutering, and socializtion can easily, without a doubt, prevent any problems that could be caused by dominate behaviors. It’s so easy to label certain breeds: dominate, agressive, than look at the real problem which is lazy and/or irresponsible owners. These breed get the reputation because someone who didn’t care to train or didn’t have to time got a dog and found out that it wouldn’t just sit around and not cause trouble. As for Chows being independent, yes, they are. That doesn’t mean they don’t want to be with you or the family, though. It’s more like…they won’t explode of joy when they see a new person.
