Should I Answer Salary History Questions in a Job Posting?
I always ask for what I want. If the salary is posted in the job and it doesn’t meet your requirements then if you give it or not you’re not likely to want to job anyway. To your point = negotiating is just that. You may come to a win-win for both of you. Good Luck. Cindy http://www.ThingsLookGreatIn2008.com http://www.
You’re right – this can be a tricky situation for all the reasons you listed. Job postings that require a salary history are a big turn-off to me. I typically do not apply for jobs that require you to give a salary history because I figure that the company is cheap, that they want to hire whomever will work the cheapest (cheap does not always equal better; hence the saying: “you get what you pay for”), and that they are probably not going to be very generous about handing out raises later on down the road. The only jobs that I would apply for that require a salary history (and I have applied for some of these) would be City, County, or State jobs. Where I live in California, these types of jobs typically pay well, even when you are just starting out, and are likely paying as much or more than my ending salary at a non-government job.
