Should high school students be required to volunteer in community service projects?

Although doing “community service” is a nice thing to do, I don’t think it should be required in order to get a high school diploma. It is something taught to you by mainly your parents and is similar to good manners. If you have to help give food to the poor, clean up the street, etc. than why not make students open doors for their female peers? Make it a rule to let the ladies go first. Honestly, I have participated in community service and I’m planning on making my kids someday doing it, but it just doesn’t make sense that you have to do it as part of school. Community service is also character building. So should there be a portion of character building during school? If that than why stop at community service hours. What about the cardinal virtues? Justice, fortitude, prudence, and temperance. Should we require students to do something in relationship to them too? I don’t think school should cover those things. It should be either you parents, religious class or organization of so
