Should Federal and State governments give vouchers to parents who want to send their children to Private School?”
• If they can do it without harming the kids who stay behind in public school… • And if the schools receiving vouchers will be held to the same standards as public schools in terms of curriculum and testing, transportation and meals, accepting all kids who apply, and not teaching religious beliefs… • And if they can guarantee that vouchers will cover the entire cost of tuition for any parent who wants to use them. Those are the big problems with the voucher proposals I’ve seen. They take money away from public schools, which makes the schools even worse for kids who stay there; they funnel public money to religious groups or to schools which only appear to perform better than public schools because they aren’t held to the same standards (e.g. they can choose to accept only the highest-performing kids); and they don’t cover the entire cost of tuition at most schools, which makes them useless to families who can’t afford to pay the difference.
