Yes, people want to drive economical, green cars. They are tired of spending a fortune at the pump. They are tired of feeling/being captive to Near Eastern, African and South American dictators and theocracies. But, no, because the word “should” bothers me a bit. I believe that when some clever entrepreneurial person designs and builds a practical economically green car, the US population will flock to it, making him/her a billionaire. But, forcing a sub-par electric car or cars down the consumers’ throats is not the American Way. The Chevy Volt, mentioned in the DB, is an interesting option. It has a range of 40 miles on its battery. That is the pre-release manufacturer’s claim anyway. Who knows? Maybe they underestimated? That’ll get you a little more than halfway from Springfield to Joplin on a full battery. When depleted, the gas engine kicks in to replenish the battery. The reviews I read talk of engine racing noises as the car transitions to recharging mode. That’s comforting…
