Should drugs be illigal?

NO it is pure insanity to think we could build a nation (USA) of the scoundrels, misfits, and felons of all other countries put them all together and make a group of laws (victimless i might add) based on nothing more than being prohibitive. Good old Abe Lincoln said you can not make a law strictly to be prohibitive, for all you will do is to create a new vice. when America failed at stopping booze we should have learned, all it did was increase consumption. The same thing it has done for drugs. Our pointless laws rooted in bigotry have destroyed who knows how many lives.

The war on drugs is a failure. I believe anybody should be able to put whatever they want into their bodies so long as they don’t harm anybody else. The war on drugs has increased violence, created stronger drugs, formed violent drug lords and gangs, and through my own experience made it easier for kids to access the drugs. They can’t even keep drugs out of prisons let alone in society itself. As far as rape and murder that harms other people and I don’t except that.

As a police officer for over 30 years working narcotics for over 20 years… I have too often seen the results of what illegal drugs and drug addiction do to our youth as well as adults and the families associated with these folks. Drugs are not secluded to a specific group of ethnic group but to all walks of life. As I would tell my own child, I’d prefer to know that the pilot of my airplane, doctor performing my surgery, or lawyer finalizing my legal documents were competent and not making mistakes due to drug abuse. You can’t tell me that marijuana is good and has no downfalls. You can tell me that there are drugs which cause more IMMEDIATE harm and yet because I’m required by law AND oath to represent the laws equally….I have no other choice than to effect an arrest when a law is broken in my presense. As for marijuana specifically, it is classified under the Controlled Substance Act of 1970 (CSA) in Schedule I due to its’ lack of medical use, potential for abuse, and potential f

I believe that there are some illegal drugs that don’t need to be illegal. However, your reasoning is wrong. Why have any laws? There are always people who are not going to obey them. The drugs that alter your state of mind (LSD, etc.) should definitely be illegal. However, recreational use of drugs like marijuana and cocaine is no more dangerous than causal consumption of alcohol. And, those two drugs are the reason that our prisons are overflowing. Too many people are in jail for possessing and selling drugs. Want to stop gang violence? Legalize pot and coke. That accounts for a huge portion of their profits. Cut their profits, and there will be no gangs to join. .

You should watch the movie “Grass”. It gives a wonderful history of the laws surrounding marijuana. It cannot and should not be lumped with other “harder” drugs. What I find obscene are all the legal drug advertisements on TV. Personally, I rarely even take an aspirin, yet on a daily basis I see people self medicating for a whole slurry of perceived ailments. The mentality is prevalent to pop a pill for just about anything.
