The counsel of the Institute of Medicine, which has issued a report advising the Defense Department to phase in a military-wide tobacco ban, beginning at the military academies. The report was requested by the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs, which asked the Institute of Medicine to identify policies and practices that could lower rates of smoking and help Soldiers and veterans quit. The Pentagon reassured troops on July 15th that it won’t ban tobacco products in war zones. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will review the new study to see if there are some things than can be done to work toward the goal of having a smoke-free force some day.
