Should corporations, unions and trade associations be permitted to write checks directly to politicians and parties?
I have a huge problem with any organization making campaign donations to any political Candidate or party. I think that it is presumptuous on the part of a corporation, union or any association to unilaterally determine that all of its members, employees or associates agree politically and philosophically with candidates or a certain political party. If the Teamsters union for example make a donation on behalf of the teamsters union, it tells the candidate and the world that all of those union members are in that camp. I do not believe that is necessarily the case. There are issues that individuals belonging to that group may have other than what the “union interests” may address, such as “abortion” or “drilling for oil in ANWAR”. I also feel that the heads of these corporations, Unions and trade associations use the financial muscle of the organization to perpetuate their personal views and philosophies.
