Should Commercial Sponsorship Be Used to Subsidize Athletics Programs?
Yes! Schools should by all means use commercial sponsorship to subsidize their athletics programs. In fact, I would say that commercial sponsorship should do more than “subsidize” athletics programs. In the future, it should fully support them. The reasons for this are simple. First, America is a capitalistic society, and with that in mind, athletics programs have a valuable commodity to trade: advertising. Second, those wanting to provide commercial sponsorship want to take an active role in their communities. Athletics programs give them exactly what they want–exposure in the community as well as the knowledge that they are supporting many worthwhile endeavors (e.g., scholarships, sportsmanship).Third, raising funds from commercial sponsorship helps alleviate the difficulties of how athletics programs are funded.
