Should colleges punish marijuana-smokers more severely than underage drinkers on campus?
I believe colleges should punish students caught smoking marijuana more severely than students caught drinking underage simply because drinking is legal after the age of 21, whereas marijuana is illegal altogether, and in a case of illegality someone caught in the street by police would be in much more trouble for marijuana use than drinking. Those caught using any drugs are also more likely to be involved in criminal activities at or near the college, not to mention being associated with the illegal dealing marijuana itself in some form. drinking is much more widespread and is seen as a normal part of socialization and recreation for most people. Although i believe both to be fairly harmless as long as done in moderation, it is often more difficult to judge the effects of marijuana because of not knowing the strength of whatever particular type is bought, alcohol on the other hand is regulated and the strength is always known. The effects of marijuana can last much longer than alcohol
