Should citizens be able to vote directly on issues like in a direct democracy?

No. Voting to steal all money of all red heads is wrong. Ultimately, this is what a democracy does. The majority vote to oppress the minority, to steal from them, to overpower them. No matter what supposed safeguards are in place, the majority votes to force people to do what they don’t want. A checkbox on your taxes, saying “I voluntary choose to donate X amount to program X” is the right way to go. Not only does this NOT steal from those who oppose program X, but it shows those running the program exactly how much they can spend. If you are anti abortion, being forced with threat of death or imprisonment if you do not fund it, is absurd. Same goes for those who are anti war, or anti stem cell, or anti socialized medicine, or anti military world empire. Being forced to fund what you oppose is in no way what citizens in a free society should be forced to do.
