Should cigarettes be sold in plain packages?
As a smoker, no, because most smokers develop affection for branding. As a liberal, yes, because anything that helps cut down on smoking is a great idea (except of course for torture, execution and stuff like that). (Do you still have Dunhills and those harsh as lye imports from Singapore? If so, you could also drastically improve things by going to ‘light’ cigarettes like we have in the US. It doesn’t make that big a difference but at least they’re not quite as overpowering as some of the European and Asian brands.) I’m guessing none of you three that posted ahead of me are smokers. Believe it or not, branding and packaging design are a part (not a huge part, but some part) of the emotional crutch of smoking. Loss of a favored brand design and flavor is in fact off putting to smokers, and though in my case, I’m sure it wouldn’t inspire me to quit, it would at least dampen my enthusiasm a bit and I just might cut down a little if forced to smoke something for which I don’t have a very
I don’t think putting cigarettes in plain wrappers will make any difference. I smoke and will still buy them. Is Andy Burnham going to start to cut the number of smokers by banning tobacco products in prisons—I don’t think so– it would be against the prisoners human rights would it not . Why not just put them on the top shelf with the porno books instead of under the counter.
