1In The Jewish War Josephus (an ancient Jewish historian) records that 97,000 Jews were taken captive following the first Jewish revolt in A.D. 66-73 and that 1,100,000 people died during the siege of Jerusalem that concluded the war, the majority of which were Jews. Similarly, Cassius Dio records that after Bar Kokhba’s Revolt in 132-135 A.D., very few Jews survived. 985 villages were razed by the Romans, 580,000 Jewish men were killed during the fighting and an uncountable number of Jews died as a result of famine, disease, and fire.
