From a historical perspective, Christianity has played a prominent role in American society; after all, it is the major religion of America. However, the role and influence of this religion in our society has fluctuated across time as various interpretations of the Bible have been been made, new movements and “types” of Christians have emerged, and competing religious interests have developed in American culture. While Christianity may play a major part in American life and culture, the type or brand of Christianity is varied and complex. And, this does not take into account the role that other religions and cultures have played in American life. Our country is, after all, a cultural mosaic. With that being said, it would be more appropriate to teach NOT how Christianity has influenced American history, BUT rather how religion has influenced American history.
