Should cholecystectomy be done along with splenectomy?
Cholelithiasis is common in thalassemia intermedia patients. So ultrasound should be done to detect gallstones prior to operation or gallstones should be checked at time of operation. If there are gallstones, cholecystectomy should be performed along with splenectomy. Most thalassemia major patients do not develop gallstones.
