The phrase should be removed. I don’t consider myself to be ‘under God’, because I don’t believe in God. For me, that would be like saying I amount to a lot less than Spiderman. Considering Spiderman is fictional, that would mean I am nothing. In response to all the people saying about history and heritage, Christianity is not an American (or even a Western) thing. It’s not part of the country’s own heritage, it was taken there by the people who moved from Europe, who in turn received it from Middle Eastern travellers. It arrived by way of war and death. You want American heritage, go and find some Native American tribes and ask them about what it is to be American. If you can find any that haven’t been forced to give up their heritage by the European Americans.
