Should capital punishment be televised?
Televising capital punishment is often proposed by death penalty opponents as a way of “repulsing” the public enough to end the death penalty altogether. This would backfire in their faces big time and it makes me wonder how far off they are on the public psyche. We live in a country where people tune in to watch people eat worms and donkey feces. Anyone care to look up the numbers of times those beheading videos have been downloaded – I read that Nick Berg’s was downloaded over 80,000 times in the US alone. The rest of the beheadings enjoyed similar internet success. Yes, thousands of Americans went out of their way to find and watch horrific videos of innocent people having their heads sawed off. These are some naive people who think that the average viewer for this type of program would be repulsed. If anything, he would get excited (but a little bored after watching beheadings). The rest of us wouldn’t watch and I don’t think it should ever be televised.
